| Öskudagur is a traditional Icelandic holiday that takes place on Ash Wednesday. It is a day of merriment and pranks. As recently as a generation ago children pinned little bags on the backs of unsuspecting passers-by. These small Öskupokar bags held ashes. Today, Öskudagur has changed from pinning little bags containing ashes onto the backs of unsuspecting people into a celebration similar to Halloween in the US; however it goes on all day. Children dress up in costumes. They go door to door or to stores and sing songs for candy. We didn't dress up. We just made those little bags with string and a bent needle pin. Grown-ups were popular victims, especially the old ladies. |
